Studying protein functions helps solve problems in the real world. One focus in our lab is studying proteins with solved structures, but no assigned function, leveraging massive amounts of computational structural data now available. Another area of interest is engineering enzymes to modify or improve their functions for use in health, food production and environmental remediation contexts. A new area of focus is leveraging machine learning to better understand protein function. Students will work with a wide variety of biochemical, molecular biology and computational tools as part of these projects.
